Seasons Change, But God Remains the Same

Fall is upon us, which means the weather is getting cooler, the trees will begin to change color and eventually fall off their branches to the ground. Even the time changes and falls back an hour. The day light will get shorter, and the nights begin to get longer. Along with the change of the weather, our mood changes as well. Some of us welcome the change in season, while some of us resist it.

But change in seasons is inevitable and nothing can’t prevent it. It’s been set in motion since the beginning of time. Genesis 1:14 mentions God setting them, while Daniel 2:21 states that He changes the times and seasons, removing and establishing kings and giving wisdom to the wise.

As the seasons change, we also go through seasons of change. Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us that to
everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. You are probably going through some changes at this very moment in time. Maybe your season is resembling a fall season where your leaves are changing color, and your leaves will soon begin to fall away. Before you know, the leaves that once dressed you and adorned you have died off. A sense of emptiness, even bareness sets in.

But when you take notice, a tree, during this fall season remains standing, rooted and waiting patiently, enduring the next season, winter, that cold and bitter winter. A tree can’t uproot itself and move to skip the winter season so it can grow back its leaves. And even though that tree seems stuck, it’s not, for it has been placed there for a reason. When spring has sprung, that tree begins to grow it’s leaves once again and bears fruit yet again. It’s inevitable!

We may look like a tree with no leaves, but like a tree planted and rooted, we wait for our season to begin to blossom again because winter isn’t forever.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, That bringeth forth his fruit in his season. His leaf also shall not wither; And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

Psalms 1:3

One thing we can be sure of is that while we go through our seasons of change, we have a God who changes not.

Nature changes but the nature of God remains the same.

During a season of change, let’s be reminded of some truths about God.

  • God remains the same because of His inherent perfection and eternal nature, meaning His character and attributes (like His goodness, power, and holiness) are absolute and unchanging.
  • God’s perfection makes change impossible, as He is already complete and does not need to improve or alter.
  • God is described as everlasting and infinite, meaning His existence and nature transcend time, making change irrelevant.
  • God’s character—His holiness, love, justice, and truth—is constant and does not vary.  Because God does not change, His word and promises are steadfast and trustworthy.

For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore, ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

Malachi 3:6

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

James 1:17

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.
